The meaning of CADCOR

Community: Through location, participation, interests, age and numerous other factors we are members of many communities. CADCOR presents the vision of a safe and healthy drug free community where children surpass their potential and families meet to solve problems for the few and for the many. As our varied lives and backgrounds come together, our neighborhoods strengthen our cities, county, state, and country.

Anti-drug: The most persistent, accepted, and easily attainable drug for youth is ALCOHOL. We know that pills, potions, legal and illegal substances are available but our number one focus is alcohol. According to the 2006 SPF-SIG survey, by the twelfth grade 42 percent of students surveyed have had beer, wine, or liquor in the past 30 days.

Coalition: CADCOR is an alliance of distinct groups and individuals uniting for a common cause, to reduce substance use and abuse by our youth and create strong and safe communities.

History

In 1990, the Murfreesboro Housing Authority (MHA) received a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) an formed the Drug Elimination Task Force. MHA, Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, City Schools, and the Murfreesboro Police Department had a tremendous effect on reducing drug trafficking and building a sense of community in Murfreesboro Public Housing. With help and support from local government, civic organizations, and members of the community, the Task Force experienced much success through the 1990's. In April of 2002 the Drug Elimination Task Force became the Community Anti Drug Coalition of Murfreesboro (CADCOM).

In 2003, CADCOM received instruction in coalition building from the CADCA sponsored Greenhouse Training. Further training with CADCA and the Tennessee Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services in 2006 strengthened our understanding of the Strategic Prevention Framework, a process that assists coalitions in assessment, capacity, planning, implementing strategies, and evaluating outcomes.

Due to their continued success, the coalition grew to include Rutherford County. Since Murfreesboro is a part of Rutherford County, the task force changed their name from CADCOM to CADCOR - Community Anti-drug Coalition of Rutherford.

CADCOR is funded through the Drug Free Community Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Agency (SAMHSA) and the Tennessee Strategic Prevention Framework - State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG) from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and the Tennessee Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services (DADAS) and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health.
